High heels and covering up?

moroccan clothing
nomadic asked:

Okay, Moroccophiles, here's a question. What's the point of dressing extremely modest, then wearing high heels? I mean, I'll tell you that I personally **** heels, never wear them, and don't understand them no matter what the clothes that go with them, so I'm definitely biased, but how come there are so many Moroccan women who wear high heels with djellaba and hijab? Aren't heels meant for looking **** and accentuating the ****? I just don't get it!

(And okay, I'll make an exception here for very short people - they've got an excuse)

I think its like having to wear uniforms to school but wearing a **** underwear…knowing that you have it in makes you feel a little better and feminine.

It is because they do what they can do.. there is nothing in their law book agaisnt high heels so that is what they can wear and stay within their regulated dress protocol, same reason many of them that are not of the strictest vein of muslim wear beuatiful or colorful silk headscarves…. all women will find a way to feminize if given the chance (which is why little girls take flowers and stick them in their hair without being taught to)

LOL –I always say this to my sil!! I don't know what is going on! I have one pair of high heels, I wore them when I got married (part of the day) because the dress was long and I was outside and didn't want it dragging…plus I am on the shorter side 5 foot 4 or so….but I didn't really do it to be taller. The only other times I have ever worn a heel was at graduation….and that wasn't some spikey heel either, that was just a chunky but cute kind!

The host mom I had one time while living in France told me she thought it was funny that in the US all the older women wore comfort shoes and the young ones wore heels. She said in France the young ones wear comfort shoes (like sneakers etc) and the older women wore heels….and it was so true! And they would wear them on cobble stone streets….and of course every now and then you would see them fall! It made me think of women in Morocco…walking around on unpaved streets and stuff I think high heels should be banned! They are dangerous! They are also no good for your toes & every other part of your feet! PPL actually get plastic surgery on their feet now so they can wear some cute little shoe! It reminds me of how they used to tie the womens' feet in China!

I am so against heels! My sil thinks I am so unrefined lol because I don't wear them and I don't wear much makeup either…but that isn't just a modesty thing…I just don't like it much (doesn't mean I NEVER wear it or don't enjoy getting fixed up and putting it on) & happily, my husband prefers me w/o! Although….he might like it if I put those heels on again…..lol ;)
I'll also never forget these two girls on a bus in Morocco in their djellabas and very spikey high heels — I don't care how much they were covered or how loose their djellabas were–they looked like ******! (But they actually helped me out in a situation where my fiance (at the time) wasn't there and a beggar came up to me speaking in Arabic and I could only reply in French LOL…they thought it was so funny)

Great question!!!!

EDIT: WOW! Everyone jumped in on this–we never see this many ppl in 'Y/A-Morocco'!

I agree, it doesn't make much sense with djellaba if the person is trying to be modest or observe hijaab.
As far as Islam and hijaab it is not modest in my opinion.
Some scholars say they should not be worn in front of non mahram.
On the other hand I do like how heels look, I always have. Before I became Muslim I wore them and loved them. If they were what I consider modest I would wear them now :)

Because All women, everywhere love a nice Prada?

Shoes are kind of a universal among women. We love them. We love them because we'll always be a size 6. Because we'll never really be too old for a classy pair of black leather slingbacks. Because it's easy to keep up with the trends between round toes, square toes and pointy toes and open toes. Shoes defy gravity and social barriers. (I can't tell you how many times I've stopped a lady in the department store and said "Cute Shoes! DG?")

Kind of like women and their hair.

I wear heels, though they are not very high. I also wear a hijab and burka. I started wearing them around 6 months ago. I didnt realise that there was anything wrong with wearing them together………

I'm not Moroccan… n I don't know what djellaba is…
BUT… I'm a Muslim and wear hijab!
I wore Abaya in Dubai… and Manteau in Tehran…

Anyways… I do wear heels… I'm not short but I like wearing heels… its feminine…
Most women in Dubai or Tehran wear heels ALL the time… you have to really look around to find someone who doesn't!
I got a bit lazy in wearing heels after I moved to US… lol…

EDIT:
Ok… I just looked up djellaba on the net…
AND… I don't think high heels would go with it!
Its a nice comfy breezy kind of dress… now I get what you're saying :D … high heels wouldn't go with it… they're totally opposites :D

Hi, high heels are Not to be worn by muslim women. They accentuate the 'rear end' as a coupler of people mention, this of course draws attention to it, which is contrary to the whole point of covering….also they change the height of the woman, which is considered doing something strictly for the sake of showing off without anyreal need…they can also make that "click clock" noise as a woman walks, again drawing attention to her self……just wear em at home.
