how should i cure my La Chamba clay tagine before using?

the la chamba tagine is from high-heat-fired black clay, made by hand in colombia. sold at crate and barrel, i heated it in the oven with water according to instructions, it smells odd. i don't know if it's ready to use, or if the smell will transfer to the food.
